Jasmine

Jasmine - Jasminum officinalea

Jasmine’s rich, warm and floral scent provides a lovely way to welcome the autumn season and prepare for winter. This beautiful evergreen shrub has delicate bright green leaves and star-shaped white flowers, which are very fragrant. A concrete is produced by solvent extraction of the flowers and then from this process the absolute is obtained from the concrete by separation with alcohols. It is the absolute that is used in aromatherapy.

Jasmine is useful for uterine disorders, headaches, labor pains, depression, nervous exhaustion, and stress-related conditions. “It produces a feeling of optimism, confidence, and euphoria. It is most useful in cases where there is apathy, indifference or listlessness.” – R. Tisserand (The Art of Aromatherapy) I find this beautiful aroma gives an overall feeling of wellbeing. – Enjoy!

Zoopharmacognosy

A term coined by Dr. Eloy Rodriguez, a biochemist and professor at Cornell University, zoopharmacognosy refers to the process by which animals self-medicate. In this process, animals select and use plants, soils and insects to treat and prevent disease. The word Zoopharmacognosy is derived from the roots zoo ("animal"), pharma ("drug") and gnosy ("knowing").

Observers have noticed that some species ingest non-foods, such as toxic plants, clay or charcoal, to ward off parasitic infestation or poisoning. Illustrating the medicinal knowledge of some species, apes have been observed selecting a particular part of a medicinal plant by taking off leaves, then breaking the stem to suck out the juice.[1] In an interview with Neil Campbell, Rodriguez describes the importance of biodiversity to medicine:

"Some of the compounds we've identified by zoopharmacognosy kill parasitic worms, and some of these chemicals may be useful against tumors. There is no question that the templates for most drugs are in the natural world. [2]"

We teach this process in our "Working with Animals and Essential Oils" courses. Our primary focus is to teach you how to work with the animal by letting them choose the plant or essential oil they need at that time. It is amazing to watch the healing process when you give the animal a chance to choose its remedy.

Creating a Ceremony for Animals
October 21st, Wednesday - 6:00 - 9:00pm

This class is designed to teach you how to use plants and essential oils as a blessing and healing practice for your animals. You will learn the art of ceremony, plant brushings, healing herbal baths, sacred oils and plants. These techniques can be used with your animals as a blessing, for a celebration, during an illness, in health, and in their passing. At the end of the class we will perform a ceremony for you and your animals.

Intro to Working with Animals and Essential Oils (Animal Aromatics)

Come and learn the basic principles of the art and science of essential oils and how to work with animals using essential oils. In this class you will learn:

  • Essential Oils: Medicinal and therapeutic qualities
  • Methods of application: inhalation and topical
  • Basic chemistry of essential oils and safety
  • Intro to Applied Kinesiology for deciding the correct oils for animals
  • Dosage, application
  • How to present the oils to animals - you learn how to understand what the animal wants

Winter Health
November 21st, Saturday 10:00 – 2:00pm

You will learn about plants and essential oils that help you through the winter months on a mental and physical level. This class is mostly hands-on. We will be making lots of herbal tonics to support you and your family through the winter months and an essential oil "mental health remedy." So be prepared to create in a fun, community-like environment.
